William M. Calder III Memorial Fellowship in Classical Studies
The William M. Calder III Memorial Fellowship in Classical Studies is awarded annually to early career, highly qualified AvH Feodor Lynen Fellows and/or AvH Humboldt Research Fellows for research projects related to classical antiquity or to its reception in medieval and modern times.
Summary
The fellowship provides additional financial support for the awardees’ scholarship (up to 12 months) and may include a research allowance (for Lynen fellows) for the host for research expenses directly related to the fellow’s research, including for research materials or a workshop related to the fellow’s research.
The fellowship is made possible through a generous gift from the late Professor William M. Calder III, a recipient of the Humboldt Research Award in the Humanities (GWI) in recognition of his lifetime achievements and scholarly contributions in classical Greek studies. Through this gift, Professor Calder ensured that intellectual exchange in classical studies between Germany and the United States will continue to thrive.
Selection Process
The Selection Committee meets in late summer and considers all current or prospective Lynen or Humboldt Research Fellows conducting research related to classical antiquity or to its reception in medieval and modern times. To be eligible, scholars must have received from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation either a Feodor Lynen Fellowship (to go to the United States) or a Humboldt Research Fellowship (to go to Germany) within the previous 12 months. Candidates eligible for selection will be notified in late summer, with selection completed in the early fall.
William M. Calder III Memorial Fellows (2004 to date)
The prestigious William M. Calder III Fellowships in Classical Studies have been awarded since 2004 to support projects exploring such diverse topics as literary techniques in Greek historical narratives, Greek cultural identity in the Late Hellenistic and Early Roman Imperial Period, religious conflicts of the late Greco-Roman antiquity, and ancient Platonism.
