The panel will explore the essential role of the rule of law in maintaining functional and sustainable democracies in both the United States and Germany. It will also highlight current challenges to the rule of law, such as the undermining of democratic norms, the politicization of science, misinformation, and threats to judicial independence. The panel will also discuss the importance of protecting academic freedom to support evidence-based policymaking.
Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United States Andreas Michaelis will provide opening remarks. These will be followed by an expert panel discussion. Panelists include Michael Polt, Ambassador in Residence and Professor of Practice at the School of Politics and Global Studies, Arizona State University and Emily Campbell, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Rhode Island College.
